“We’re Short on Space, Tight on Room our Sterile Store Area Needs Urgent Improvement”

This recent statement from an Operating Theatre Manager was a call for help and guidance.

Their sterile store was inefficient, used old out dated steel shelving, created OH&S issues, was difficult to clean and not compliant with the Australian Standard AS4187.

This was recognised as an unacceptable situation for a modern healthcare facility.

In consultation with the team from Chrome Wire Shelving Wholesalers Australia, the theatre management and staff, a thorough review was undertaken of traffic flows, OH&S concerns, current space usage and future needs including:

• Operation set up trolley areas.

• Aisle width and shelf heights.

• Special requirements for procedure pack storage.

• Access for emergency set ups.

• Integration of current shelving into a new efficient and compliant layout.

Following this review solutions were offered to significantly improve efficiency, provide more usable storage space and an improved working environment.

All these improvements were managed during hospital down time in order to minimise the potential for disruption.
